Poetry for Young People
Written by: Emily Dickinson
Publisher: Sterling Publishing Company
Copyright date: 1994
Pages: 48
Genre: Poetry
Grade Level: 5-8th grade
Summary: This book is a collection of poems written by Emily Dickinson for young people. The illustrations are beautiful and are perfectly matched with the poems written. Most of the poems are written about nature and the beauty of it. One thing I thought was neat about this book is that it includes definitions of the more difficult vocabulary used in the poems. The definitions are found at the bottom of the page in which they are used on.
Classroom use: With the use of difficult vocab words, this book would be a great one to have students read to learn new vocabulary. More specifically it can be used when teaching older students about poetry because the rhyming isn't as obvious. It is a good example to transition from the sing song rhyme to more advanced rhyme schemes.

This sounds like a very intriguing book. I feel like having the definitions in the book will help the reader to understand the meaning of the complex words. I like your classroom use as using this book to expose the students to new vocabulary.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like this book would be really useful in teaching poetry. I like that you suggested using it to transition students into more difficult forms of poetry but having the illustrations help with the interpretation of it. This is one more book I will add to my growing list of resources.
